Have you noticed subtle changes in Mom or Dad? Are you unsure if these changes are cause for concern?
It’s normal for aging parents to slow down. Hearing loss, vision problems, mild cognitive changes, and chronic conditions like arthritis or COPD develop over time and can make daily life more difficult.
Mom or Dad may find this natural progression manageable. The morning routine might take longer, and they might not be as excited about social gatherings as they were a few years ago, but that’s not unusual. You just check in a little more frequently to make sure they’re okay.
But there are certain changes in how aging parents take care of themselves that a few extra phone calls can’t fix. It could be time to consider home care to make sure they’re safe and enjoying life.
1) Lack of Proper Hygiene
Lack of mobility and difficulty getting in and out of the shower can make basic hygiene more challenging.
2) Falls or Fear of Falling
Falls are a major reason for a rapid decline in health and quality of life in older adults. Home care reduces the risk of falls so your loved one can live a longer, happier life.
3) Medication Confusion
When medication regimens aren’t followed or mixed up, or medication is taken incorrectly or missed altogether, the consequences could be serious.
4) General Appearance
If Dad’s standard pressed pants and button-down shirts have been replaced with sweatpants and stained t-shirts, he may be having trouble keeping up with daily life.
5) Poor Nutrition
Eating processed foods, frozen dinners, or junk food too often instead of nutritious, home-cooked meals can be a sign that meal preparation had become too much.
6) Forgetfulness
Memory lapses about where you left your keys are seemingly harmless, but forgetfulness can also make it difficult to manage a schedule, finances, and medication.
7) Change in Demeanor
Depression, anxiety, fixating on one topic, or complaining about things that normally wouldn’t be a concern could be signs that your aging parent is struggling to process their thoughts and emotions.
8) Unkempt House
If the house is a mess, papers are piling up, old food is left in the refrigerator, or medication bottles are empty, basic life activities could be too much to manage.
If you’re seeing two or three of these warning signs in an aging parent, it’s probably time to have a conversation about home care. At Encore Life Care, we say “a little bit of help now can prevent a lot of help later.” Please contact us today to schedule an appointment.
